South Bank and Arts Precinct

Remodelled into the city's cultural and recreation precinct after Expo 88, the southern bank of the Brisbane River has parklands, eating places and a man-made beach.

Little Stanley Street
Dine alfresco at one of the many eateries along the bustling Little Stanley Street, opposite South Bank Parklands. Try food from many cultures or a glass of wine from Greystone's Bar. Little Stanley Street is also home to South Bank Arts and Crafts Markets that operate from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. You can also find the best in shopping with fashion boutiques, accessories, gifts and homewares.

South Bank
South Bank Parkland's 16ha complex of shops, parks, public art and riverside walks is an excellent place to dine, shop or just relax. This ambient riverside location has street entertainers, pubs and a varied events program ensures that South Bank is a lively place, especially at night. The Lantern Village Market operates on Friday evenings, from 5pm to 10pm,and on the weekends there is a Craft Village Market, from 11am to 5pm.

South Bank Beach
This sandy beach, beside a man-made subtropical lagoon surrounded by palm trees and shady lawns, is a cool place to relax during warm weather. There is a lifeguard on patrol during peak periods.

Queensland Art Gallery
Brisbane's premier cultural attraction, the gallery has an excellent permanent collection of Aboriginal, European, and Asian artworks and invariably hosts visiting or special exhibitions. Admission is free except for the special exhibitions.

Queensland Maritime Museum
Located at the eastern end of South Bank, this museum is based around dry docks that first saw service in 1881. A variety of relics, static displays, ship models and old vessels, including a WWII frigate, reveal Queensland's maritime history.

Queensland Museum
The museum has displays on the state's natural history as well as indigenous and European history. Exhibits include Aboriginal and colonial artefacts, the skeleton of a humpback whale, a dinosaur garden and a pioneer aviator's airplane.

Queensland Performing Arts Centre
Opera and theatre lovers should check the local papers for details of current performances at the Optus Playhouse, Lyric Theatre, Concert Hall and Cremorne Theatre. These venues are all part of the Performing Arts Centre complex.
