Calthorpes' House
The house, built in 1927, contains original furnishings, household appliances and photos that tell the story of domestic life in Canberra's early days.

Commonwealth Place
Newly opened, this forum for national rallies, concerts, displays and exhibitions consists of a grassed cupped square and a paved area, Speakers Square, a gift from Canada. Underneath the grassed square, will be a space for exhibitions and a restaurant, Watermark on the Edge, and the offices of Reconciliation Australia. Close by is Reconciliation Place which provides visitors with the opportunity to share indigenous stories through artwork, events and celebrations.

High Court of Australia
Cascading water steps lead to this imposing building on the southern shores of Lake Burley Griffin. Attendants will point out the building's functions and architectural features and you can examine portraits of the Chief Justices and the impressive murals in the Public Hall.

National Archives of Australia
With its vast collection dating back to Federation, the National Archives is often called the nation's memory. It occupies a famous old Canberra building (once the GPO) which was built at the same time as Old Parliament House. Here you'll find the original Constitution along with changing exhibitions and displays. The Archives collection includes Commonwealth government records about sport, the theatre, parliament, lighthouses, trains, inventions and much more. In the Orientation Gallery you can begin research on your family tree through World War I dossiers, shipping lists, naturalisation certificates and other immigration records. An attraction full of surprises!

National Gallery of Australia
Set aside at least half a day to see the paintings that have defined the Australian nation and admire a selection of iconic international works from various art periods. Blockbuster and other special exhibitions are the Gallery's forte, so check the 'What's On' section of this book for the latest treats. Don't miss the three-hectare sculpture gardens and the excellent National Gallery shop that stocks a wide range of art merchandise - books, posters, cards and jewellery. There are three restaurants, including the beautiful Sculpture Garden restaurant.

National Library of Australia
This landmark building features significant works of art around the building including sculpture by Henry Moore, coloured glass by Leonard French and intricate Mategot tapestries. As well, changing exhibitions often highlight items from this fine institution's stunning collection and there are public lectures featuring prominent writers.

National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery aims to increase understanding of Australian identity, history and culture through portraiture. The National Portrait Gallery displays portraits in two locations - Commonwealth Place and Old Parliament House. These two locations are within five minutes of each other. The Gallery hosts dynamic exhibitions and unique community programs and events.

Old Bus Depot Markets
The Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston offer high quality,contemporary, handcrafted items and home produce. You will also find artwork, jewellery and great entertainment. The markets are a 'must see' for visitors. Open Sundays, check the website for special events.

Old Parliament House
Familiar to Australians as the home of Australia's national parliament from 1927 to 1988, this heritage building is today a museum of political history. Within Old Parliament House, the two parliamentary chambers are the highlight, but there are dozens of rooms and offices with original furniture and fittings that evoke a bygone era. A range of changing exhibitions bring past political events to life. The shop sells a good range of books and souvenirs. Try the restaurant, The Ginger Room for dinner or Cafe in the House for coffee or lunch.

Parliament House
Parliament House is the home of Australia's Federal Parliament and one of the world's most acclaimed buildings. It is renown for its impressive architecture, landscaped gardens and collection of Australian contemporary art. Works from the Parliament House Art Collection, including the Great Hall Tapestry, are always on view. Visitors may tour the building independently using a self-guiding brochure or enjoy a complimentary guided tour. Audio tours are available in English, French, German, Japanese and Chinese. All parliamentary proceedings are open to visitors. The Parliament Shop stocks a wide range of souvenirs, gifts and books. The Queen's Terrace Cafe is open for light refreshments every day.

Questacon - The National Science & Technology Centre
We always make science fun! Questacon offers an interactive and hands-on experience with over 200 exhibits to discover. Dare the older kids to take a 6-metre free fall, or take the under 6's to Mini Q and interact with them while developing their motor and sensory skills. You can experience an earthquake, ride Track Attack - a simulated rollercoaster and interact with dinosaurs! Family discounts are available.

Royal Australian Mint
The Mint produces circulating and collector coins, medals, medallions and currency for overseas consumption. You can view the minting process from the gallery and the Coin Museum traces the history of Australia's coinage.

Southern Cross Cruises

The Lobby Restaurant
The Lobby Restaurant is central to the Canberra fine-dining experience.
