In the city centre you'll find a range of specialty shops centred around Smith Street Mall. Many arcades link surrounding streets and it is worth looking around the numerous art and craft shops for interesting Aboriginal work. Look for shops with good local designs reflecting Darwin's casual and relaxed atmosphere. Especially busy is the backpacker area of Mitchell Street, where tour desks, trendy eateries and lodges jostle for attention.

The Mall and surrounding streets offer more than 200 specialty shops for you to discover - fashion, footwear, handbags, hats, music, books, sportswear. Forget endless, soulless shopping centre corridors crowded with people determined to get it over and go home. Here you can enjoy the difference, in a real-world environment. Shady trees, palms and gardens of greenery - a sociable ambience.
Arcades of Adventure
There are 20 arcades in Darwin City, and all of them are worth a visit, so take the time to discover them all. Along the Mall start at Galleria, Centrepoint, Anthony Plaza or Darwin Plaza. Use the arcades as links from the Mall to Mitchell and Cavenagh Streets if you're in a hurry, but don't miss all the things on offer. The Star Village, off the Mall, still has remnants of its days as an open-air cinema. Now it's a very individual shopping arcade, mostly open-air.
