Welcome to Melbourne in Winter

WINTER is an action-packed time in Melbourne as football madness sets in, but there are also plenty of performances, exhibitions and events to entertain.

The weather may be getting cooler and (we hope) wetter, which is the perfect excuse for visiting the Melbourne Art Fair at the Royal Exhibition Building (30 July - 3 August). Over 3,000 artworks will be on display along with tours, lectures and social events. The Melbourne International Film Festival is on again this year from 25 July-10 August, presenting an unparalleled program of cinema from around the globe.

NGV International is another great stop on your travels. Fans of Art Deco will love the exhibition (from 28 June) dedicated to the distinctive art movement which comprises over 300 works. Then there is The Melbourne Story, on at Melbourne Museum, which is the most object-rich exhibition about Melbourne ever staged.

This winter the Docklands is really firing up with a waterfront festival throughout June. Ignite (from dusk to 11pm) features international musicians, performance artists and lighting experts who work together to produce a truly remarkable performance. The Pyro Organ, erupting in flames twice nightly, is not to be missed.

There might be a lot happening in the city precinct, but don’t overlook the great attractions surrounding Melbourne, especially the Great Ocean Road, one of Australia’s iconic drives (see page 28 for details). The Mornington Peninsula, Ballarat and Bendigo are also spectacular at this time of year, and a little quieter so have more room to enjoy yourself.

Whether your passion is art, nature, culture or sport, you’ll find it all in and around Melbourne this winter.

Melbourne - Australia's Cultural Capital City

Cosmopolitan and vibrant, Melbourne has the air of a solid Victorian-era city. Founded on gold wealth, and for a while Australia's capital, the city has a legacy of many fine old buildings, splendid public gardens and wide, tree-lined boulevards. The CBD has many tall office towers and a busy CBD shopping precinct which is arguably Australia's most comprehensive retail centre.

Australia's second largest city, with 3.5 million inhabitants, the predominantly Anglo-Saxon population has been invigourated by post-World War Two European migrants and more recent arrivals from Asia, particularly Vietnam. Trendy inner-city suburbs are shopping, entertainment and dining magnets for locals and visitors alike. Take a tram ride, sightseeing tour or Yarra River boat trip to fully appreciate the city's diversity and beauty. And the City to Williamstown Cruise will show you a beautiful view of the Melbourne skyline.

Just an hour's drive to the west of the city are the picturesque Dandenongs, a favoured weekend destination for city dwellers. The Mornington Peninsula, to the south of the CBD is a great summer destination for its long, sandy beaches.
