CLIMATE

Tasmania has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Mild summers have a 21 degrees C average maximum, while this drops to 12 degrees C in winter. Spring and Autumn temperatures lie in the mid teens. Annual rainfall ranges from 626mm in Hobart to 2400mm on the west coast.

OPENING HOURS

Shops: Generally Mon-Sat 9am-5 or 6pm. Late-night shopping in some stores until 9pm on Thursdays and/or Fridays. Convenience stores often open daily 7am-8pm or later.
Banks: Mon-Thu 9:30am-4pm; Fri 9:30 am - 5 pm
Hotels: Pub licensing hours are generally 10am-11pm.
Museums and galleries: Generally daily 10am-5pm. Some close on one or more days of the week and hours may vary from day to day.

School summer holidays are mid-December to late January, and transport, accommodation and tourist facilities are heavily booked.

CURRENCY

The Australian unit of currency is the Australian dollar (A$),comprising 100 cents. Banknotes come in A$100, A$50, A$20, A$10 and A$5 denominations. Coins come in 5¢, 10¢, 20¢ and 50¢ (silver) and A$1 and A$2 (gold-coloured). Currency exchanges at hotels and other outlets are open outside banking hours. Major credit cards (American Express,Visa, MasterCard and Diner's Club) are widely accepted. ATMs and Eftpos facilities are available. Most types and currencies of travellers' cheques can be cashed at the airport, banks, larger hotels and many shops.
